11 January 1569 – First recorded lottery in England

Samuel Johnson said that a second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.

The lottery, in the same vein, is the triumph of hope, and greed and deceptive marketing and spectacle and coloured balls and your lizard-brain and state profiteering and corporate profiteering and that sad little newsagency with the faded Woman’s Day promotional posters behind the barred windows that still has a little hand-drawn sign on the door proclaiming that they sold the first-division-winning-ticket in 1986, over experience.

Your experience and that of roughly 8–80 million other people each and every time the numbers are drawn.

File under: law of averages | but think about what you could do with all that money
